Greta Gerwig is in a league of her own as the first solo female director whose movie has made $1 billion.
This seems like more of an achievement for the Barbie brand than for the individual director.
Inflation gets some of the credit.
That’s kinda true of every movie after the first one though.
This is sort of true, but even adjusted for inflation its performance is obscene.

For example, Barbie has already close to tied with Toy Story 4, which puts it somewhere in the top 150 inflation-adjusted film grosses of all time. It’s probably already at 3-4x what A League of their Own managed, which I think was the previous highest-grossing movie from a woman adjusted for inflation, though I am not actually sure that is right.
I’d bet she’s holding the record for highest grossing movie directed by a woman any way you measure it.
And it’s still gaining 1st run sales.
