For this Friday Movie Night, we’re starting off with one Cosy Dens (1999), a Czech Christmas black-comedy set in 1967 about a boy with a communist father who woogs for the girl next door who has a staunch anti-communist father. Boy pursues girl, and hilarity ensues. This is one of the highest-rated Christmas movies and one of the highest-rated Czech movies on Letterboxd. And how many communist-themed Christmas movies are there, anyway? We’ll check this out. After that, by popular demand, is the Jane Austen adaptation Pride & Prejudice (2005), concerning a bunch of Regency-era bougie British folk and their romantic travails. This is considered one of the definitive chick flicks of the twenty-first century; it has extremely high scores on basically all public movie-rating sites. It’s come to this, then: we’re watching some Jane god damn Austen. Director is Joe Wright, who also did Atonement (2007). Let’s see what all the hype is about.

We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here:

CWs for Cosy Dens:

  • Anti-communist brainworms. The political orientation of the movie is a bit hard to parse, since the ardent communists are shown to be fools, but so are the right-wingers, and the kids are vaguely rebellious against anything political. Life under communism is shown to be comfortable, and the tone of the film is somewhat nostalgic.
  • Suicidal ideation.
  • Suicide attempts.
  • Profanity.
  • Angry parents.
  • Comic violence.
