I just got this email from Reddit, and I just realized it’s been a year now since I swapped over here, and I haven’t thought about awards once. I always thought they were gimmicky and a way for people to throw away money. It’s just really nice not worrying about them.
(I also have participated more in BuyMeACoffee and Patreon over here now, and I think my money is better spent that way)
Also, what is with that exponential scale, so screw you if you’re a big time user apparently? And the expiration? The whole thing has corpo stink on it
Same. Both in getting the same email and not thinking about Reddit at all since then.
I guess I should finally get around to deleting my account. I kept it only because I was afraid my content would be restored if I deleted it during the protests (I edited all my stuff to
[
and it seems to have stayed that way). ]Do a “site:reddit.com your username” search & you’ll find that all your comments are still there.
Yep, they are. But they’re not on Reddit, just what Google scraped and indexed. Clicking one of those results (to a post I’ve since deleted) throws an error page on Reddit. Clicking on a result to where I’ve commented still shows the edit I made on my way out:
I’m under no illusion I’ve totally scrubbed my submissions from the internet; that was never the goal. I just didn’t want Reddit to have them anymore, and best I can tell, that was successful.
If you haven’t deleted your account, you can go to the Reddit app, search, “youruser -Deleted”, click on Messages, and it will show you all the lingering ones.
I had to run the shredder script with a couple GDPR exports until it stuck.
Just did this morning.
Last year I edited all the ones the API would let me access and they stayed edited. Just forgot to delete the account after the dust settled. Finally got around to it this morning lol.
Why is the coins to awards function logarithmic?
Only thing I can come up with since they own the currency and the value of the currency is profit. Their biggest supporters are probably already spending a ton on awards and they don’t want this to cut into their profit too much.
