    At a guess, the one looking directly at the observer (a mirror) because it would be very difficult to paint one’s own face looking away. The one in front was probably painted first, then he added himself behind, using a mirror. And considerable skill, getting the perspective and lighting right.

    Amazing, too, how these oldtimey artists got the number of fingers right almost every time!
