hostile reminder that government != people of a given country

there is some opposition, not much, and you won’t hear from them a lot because communications out of the country are tightly controlled and iranian security apparatus is on the more hostile end of scale, but there is something. iranian emigrants tend to be pretty liberal

I’ve worked with a few Iranians during college and grad school and they were all awesome people. I just with the government if their home country wasn’t evil and create the need for them to escape

It is not the argument if they were evil before the US intervened

You can not change the past and currently they are a oppresive religious dictatorship

Except the US didn’t put in the current regime. In fact, that’s the exact opposite of what happened.

Iran had a functional democracy until the UK convinced the US to overthrow them and install a dictator that allowed BP to extract all the oil they wanted. That regime pissed off the populace, leading to the Iranian Civil War which led to the overthroing of the US-backed dictatorship and Ayatollah coming to power.

The Shah had his secret police making people disappear and using torture. He was not a beacon of anything.

and by the way, i’m of opinion that it’s one of several times in history when rabid mccarthyism of CIA came around to bite them in their ass later, because if shah’s CIA handlers weren’t laser-focused on destruction of Tudeh party, then Khomeini would have to compete with them for audience and islamic revolution might have never happened. but it’s a talk for another day

You don’t think that the US putting in an extremist faction that has run the country since has anything to do with them being extremist now?

And funnily enough they’ve shown more restraint than Israel this entire time

      I’m with you on that.

The US’ support for Israel is disgusting but…this is not an example of it. Can’t even imagine what would follow if all their bombs landed but I know it wouldn’t be good for the world even if Israel deserves it.

Yeah thats on me, a bit childish, but in all seriousness “evil” is a concept for children that are unable to see more than black and white. I cant take anybodies argument serious if it uses words like that, especially when referring to something as big and complicated as a country. Even calling individual people evil is such an extreme oversimplification it prevents any productive discourse.

            it prevents any productive discourse

I vote we have a rule that all discourse in NCD must be vehemently unproductive. NCD should be a tax on your cognitive abilities. You should become noticeably dumber (and hornier) after being here. This is the way.

Well, I vehemently disagree with you, but name calling and then doubling down would not serve me well, even if I were correct and everyone else was wrong. Hypothetically, if I had committed such a faux pas, I would *stop justifying myself and start being as courteous as possible to everyone around me. *

              but name calling

              Didnt double down on that

even if I were correct and everyone else was wrong

This is a hyper concentrated echo chamber, nothing here could ever constitute disagreement with “everyone”

              stop justifying myself

I am justifying my opinion, if you are ready to get rid of your opinions just because some random people on the internet didnt like one of your comments then have fun with that.

This meme transcends races. There are many Black Israelite political groups in the US and they don’t like Israel, either, in fact, they want to move in on/annex territory from whoever lives there, because they think they’re the true inheritors. It will never be sorted out for anyone, so let’s meme instead. Detente through superior visual jokes.
