Hi there,
I have decided to take down waveform.social. There are too many nefarious actors trying to break it and I don’t have the time or energy to keep fighting them off.
For your information: Over the pas month I have had to:
- Add various DDOS prevention measures to block unwanted (repeated) signups.
- Delete a bunch of literal white noise uploads that filled my 4TB picture storage… Twice.
- Repair Lemmy (or rather pictures) after it crashed because of full storage.
I will keep waveform.social active until Friday next week so you can pull data from here, though I expect most of it has been federated to other servers anyway.
It was nice while it lasted, thanks for all the effort you put in!
So, where are you going next? There are at least a few sizeable synth forums out there, and it might be nice if most of us migrated to the same place. I’ve been back on Reddit a bit, but not sure I want to continue that.
Just a thought - we could start a Discord server. It’s not really the same kind of medium, but could still have channels for different topics (music production, synthesizers, etc.) and much easier to maintain I think.
With the new forum feature of discord this might not be a bad idea.
Let me know if you’ll follow through. I’d probably join.
Discord is so messy. If you come back after a few weeks or months, it’s difficult to get a handle on what’s been happening.
This is a shame. I’ll look into more robust hosting. How prohibitive a cost are we talking about roughly?
Probably around 300 USD a month
Wow
I created a server. I haven’t done much setup yet, but if anyone wants to join: https://discord.gg/CsGN9zzC
Since we’re here, shouldn’t we take this opportunity to make a Matrix chat instead? Private, centralized services are iffy. There’s good apps too. I like Element but I haven’t really tried the alternatives.
I’m not opposed to whatever someone else wants to set up, I just mentioned Discord because it seemed like a low-effort solution. The upside to a corporation running it is that DDOS prevention and such are someone else’s problem.
I’m not as familiar with matrix as I am Lemmy, but we could just start a room (or several) on a reliable preexisting server
