Generation X, the first generation to rely primarily on 401(k)s for retirement, is facing challenges saving enough. Many are behind schedule due to late starts, credit card debt, loans, and supporting family.
I am behind schedule due to credit card debt, loans, and family. Also due to housing costs, groceries, and usurous utility bills. Also I wish I had held onto the apple stock I had in 2011.
Heard the same thing for my entire life.
Financial advisors: “401ks are only one part of a retirement solution that should also include a pension, personal savings, and a diversified investment portfolio!!!”
Employers: “It’s 401ks and crap wages and that’s all we’re doing”
There was a really good The Daily episode that dug into 401ks.
TLDR: they only worked for the middle class.
