Lately, we’ve cancelled most of our streaming services, and will just pick up the occasional Blu-Ray or CD that we actually WANT to watch/listen to. Also, our small town public library has a decent selection of said media to check out FOR DAMN FREE.
There is something to be said for deliberately choosing a movie or show to watch ahead of time, and then following through on that choice. It just feels more satisfying than scrolling through an endless* list of whatever Netflix feels like shoveling out in front of you when you plop on the couch to veg.
*Actually, in the last several years, you can’t even do that. Your feed is just the same 20-30 titles sorted in different pretend categories, while 99% of the catalog is buried back behind a search so that you can barely even stumble across things you may have wanted to watch anymore.
/old man rant over
I totally understand. I miss when watching a movie at home felt like more of an event.
I can’t argue with the convenience, but scrolling through a streaming platform feels similar in my mind to clicking on a 2-3 hour youtube video. Ironically, this makes me less inclined to commit to actually WATCHING something.
I get what you’re saying. When I was a kid my dad used to take me and my brother to each rent a game and a movie every weekend then pick up some fast food on the way home every week. I looked forward to that so much. Now I have whatever media I want at my fingertips but it’s just not the same.
I’ve started planning ahead what I’m going to watch/play and that’s brought some of the magic back but it’s not near what I had as a kid. I wasn’t nearly as burned out as I am now either though.

This is why it’s great to hear about a cool movie, start it torrenting, and in a few hours or tomorrow it’s ready to watch. “Hey guys, I heard about this movie where a black telemarketer pretends to be white on the phone.” “Cool, let’s watch it tomorrow night.”
The future is female ejaculation.
FOR DAMN FREE.
It’s NoT FReE yoU PaY WITh yoUr Ta… -er- sorry. Not sure what came over me there. Must be reading too many healthcare threads.
Man… I knew it was obvious sarcasm but I still instinctively grimaced at the first part
I was hoping someone would get a kick out of it, but it’s sad that my mind even went there when reading the initial comment.
I’ll pin it down further to the day when enough bOtH pArTiEs ArE tHe SaMe idiots neglected to vote or voted for Nader, allowing republicans to be squatting in the White House just in time to dismiss credible intel for the threat of hijacked passenger airplanes used as kamikaze missiles, during the summer of 2001.
What was it that wasp fake cowboy baby bush said to the intelligence advisor? Very little paraphrasing here: “Ok, you’ve covered your ass, now get out.”
Damn that’s crazy. The Democrats fought back against the war hawks though, right? They all voted against the war? They didn’t just let the CIA and military walk all over them, rubberstamping whatever ridiculous drone strike or special forces ops the capitalists wanted for 20 years?
They shut down the government to stop PATRIOT and the Glass-Steagall repeal right? Let me just check some voting records real quick.
Ooh! Ooh! Ooh!
I’m always down for any justification to trot out this D.C. Simpson strip:
I absolutely miss the experience of walking around local video stores (Blockbuster being the last of these). Compared to the experience of searching for a movie on Netflix and the damn thing trying to gaslight me into forgetting what I searched for?
Yeah fuck off! I’ll take plain old shelves any day! I can see what they have and what they don’t have! I can also talk to the people who work there (often big movie fans) and get recommendations from a real human being who can explain why they like a movie rather than just “people who liked this movie also liked that movie.”
Go to the library. They’ll have shelves full of dvds you can browse for the same experience without being charged an absurd fee.
If you want to download all the Linux ISOs you could ever want, you can run a private VPN like ProtonVPN, then use qBittorrent to download the ISOs that you can find on https://1337x.to.
It may not help with your Linux ISOs, but there’s also something called Jellyfin that you can use to stream your own media (like if you record a VHS you own onto your PC).
Even better, since it’s hard to actually seed well in a VPN, you could sign up for a seedbox like https://whatbox.ca and download your Linux ISOs that way while seeding to the community. I’d still recommend you route all your internet traffic through a VPN though. Mullvad is pretty anonymous, $5 a month, and has a great reputation
For sure. It’s always good to seed Linux ISOs. Especially the really hard to find ISOs. It keeps the Linux community alive.
There are times when I wish there were still video stores I could go to to rent stuff to watch. Granted my “Blockbuster” days were post 9/11 because the small town I grew up in was apparently too small for them to open a location. The closest one was 45 minutes away, so not exactly convenient.
The last time I have even seen a video store was 5 years ago. I was on vacation and went into a small rural town while out traveling because I needed gas and I was looking for something to eat. I was tempted to go in, but my travel partner was not so keen. This past year, we ended up back in the same area, and that video store is now closed. Missed opportunity for sure.
¿Por que no los dos?
Yes.
