I was just there in September which happened to coincide with the main presidential election, the general feeling seemed to be one of hope.

But i cannot recommend sri lanka enough as a destination to visit. Amazing country full of beautiful and friendly people. And thousands of years of history just laying about the place. Was a phenomenal trip.
