Trump vastly misunderstands how foreign dependent America’s bullshit economy of e-slop, finance, and exploiting health issues is.
A trade war right after he kicks out the only people who actually make shit in America would be fucking hilarious if it wasn’t so fucking dire.
No, he doesn’t but his policy writers do know. It’s called shock doctrine.
This aligns perfectly with a bit I read that said that social movements and protest movements largely form and organize under progressive / non-repressive political situations where the people aren’t so busy fighting for their basic survival that they can get more involved in politics.
Many small but important parts come from China nowadays. Parts we use directly, and those that end up in things people buy: screws and bolts, electronic parts, all kinds of plastic products. The US no longer has the machines or manpower to produce those parts on their own, and will still have to buy them in China.
Brace for inflation in the US like you have last seen in the 1920s.
Ford, GM, Chrysler instantly regretting their republican pac contributions as Toyota comes to eat their lunch even harder.
(Toyota assembly and majority sourcing for USDM is done entirely within the US while domestic companies have mostly outsourced to Mexico heavily)
How can I succinctly put it? Hmm…
It will affect Canada a lot more.
Even with 25% tariffs, it will still be cheaper to make in Mexico. And they will no longer have to pay the workers the same as the US, as they do under USMC.
My dad’s Tundra was built in Indiana My Camaro was built in Quebec
Those companies will just bribe him into writing in an exemption for them.
Grift >>>>> Governance
Toyota and Honda(Ohio, baby)
Just got set up.
I hope they both roll strikes because I love em both.
I recently read that the Toyota Crown is assembled in Japan. Has there been any hints of tariffs there?
Correct, that is JP built, along with a cpuple other small name models… And trump has flat said everything imported is gonna see a minimum 10% tax. seeing as how the Crown made up for <1% of toyota’s total sales volume for q3 2024, I doubt there’s going to be a huge overall impact to their sales competitiveness vs the Big 3’s entire lineup though
The Camry is imported from Japan. And the Rav4 from Canada.
I’ve never even heard of that model; I could be wrong but I’m having a hard time imagining it makes up a very sizeable chunk of their inventory or sales ledger
Me either. I looked it up and I’ve seen one in town parked at Hobby Lobby. It’s an EV or Hybrid crossover that’s replaced the Avalon And it costs Mercedes money anyway so I don’t see how a tariff will matter to potential customers.
* does not apply to Chinese made MAGA hats
Literally. He also exempted his own daughter’s clothing company last time.
I am prepared for prices in general to rise. I am also prepared to explain why to every dipshit Trumper I see in my vicinity.
If I owned a store, I’d itemize the Trump Tariff on every receipt, and a total for how much extra you paid because of him.
I love this
Edit: I also think taxes should be itemized on US paystubs, like is done in many civilized nations.
One reason so many in the US hate taxes automatically is because it is a black hole into which we have no insights (on paystubs).
Your paystub (in the US) should state how exactly much is going to Medicare, unemployment, social security, disability, and general state and federal income for various programs (highway repair, workforce development, etc depending how your state uses income tax). If this is not on each of your paystubs, speak to your payroll department.
What I mean is: where it says “federal” – what federal programs specifically are my taxes going towards? This is a type of itemization that does not exist in the US. We just get rather generic buckets like “federal”, “state” etc. Medicare and Social Security get close.
I think the issue is that there would simply be too many different possible buckets, that it wouldn’t exactly be very helpful to you.
It’s easier to check and see that x% went to your federal taxes, than to see that 0.000001% went to this government program, and 0.0000126% went to this program, and…
Exactly what ArchRecord said. The main things for federal are Medicare, Social Security, and some disability (other disability is state). Other than that, there are so many federal programs that are such small percentages. Why do you think Congress takes over a year to approve the budget every year? NPR and PBS combined cost less than $7 per taxpayer per year, whereas military spending costs on average over $5000 per taxpayer per year (depending on income, and spread out over each paycheck). National forests cost the average tax payer $28 per year.
Do you know how many programs there are in the federal system? And then also in each individual state system? That paystub would be impossible, and as ArchRecord pointed out, out, it would be listed as 0.0000x% $0.000x for each stub, not yearly. But you can look up the federal budget and state budget and see what each of these programs cost and what they are for each tax bracket.
What national government anywhere in the world specifies the federal programs paid for by taxes on an employee pay stub?
As long as they have to itemize military spending honestly and can’t call it all “defense”.
What do you mean by itemized taxes? I can already see where taxes are going on my paystub: health, dental, vision, federal tax, state tax, Medicare, and social security. I can also see how much is going to 401k.
More itemized than that? I wouldn’t really want to see where the federal and state taxes are being used simply because I think that would be way too many items.
And how are those “federal” ones spent? That’s what I mean. I would like to see what percentage of my taxes go to what specific federal program, for example. Not just a vague “federal” item.
So you want the thousands of federal programs that your federal taxes go towards listed on every paycheck? You have any idea how long that list would be?
Edit: are there certain categories you want it broken down into? I feel like we can look up the federal budget to see where our money is going. Having 100s of line items where a tiny fraction of our money goes towards seems excessive.
how do you know how much you’re supposed to be taking home?
You get a gross and net pay. The net pay shows how much you take home. But the taxes are taken out as big generalistic chunks, like Federal and State. You don’t get further itemization.
By law you do. You just aren’t accessing your payroll portal online to look it up. It will be there. It’s literally required for filling out your taxes in April
I’m talking about knowing what specific tax dollars go towards. E.g. was my $100 in federal taxes earmarked for military or something else? There is no such itemization that I am aware of.
In the U.S., the IRS collects all federal taxes and deposits them in the Treasury. The President submits a proposed annual budget and Congress spends entirely too much time appropriating the money from the Treasury to fund those parts of the budget it approves. There is no way to know what your tax dollars went to specifically because they go into a comingled fund that pays for all federal appropriations.
I think everyone is misunderstanding what you are saying. Maybe I am too.
I believe you want to know what your tax dollars are being spent on? Like how much to make bombs vs space probes vs education?
If so, interesting idea. But you probably don’t want to know.
Yes, this. There is no further itemization on taxes beyond generic “federal”, “state”, etc.
I’ve occasionally looked this up over the years and calculated it all manually. Not too hard to access federal budget numbers…
I just found this tool where you can put in your tax $ and it will break it down for you: https://www.nationalpriorities.org/interactive-data/taxday/
Trump did that stickers on all the electronic prices at best buy.
There will be lots of places to put the new Trump “I did that” stickers.
I kinda want to do this just to get some petty revenge on the fuckers that plastered gas pumps with Biden stickers (which they then had to remove when gas fell back down to normal prices eventually lol)
I had to laugh when I saw those being scraped off post-haste, because it actually looked fantastic (For Biden that is! And the fucking morons that plastered “FUCK BIDEN” on t-shirts, flags and so on - even in front of children - didn’t want to make Biden look good, dog forbid!), given the prices at the time.
Does someone make these? I’d like to buy them in bulk.
Cool cool cool, looks like it’s trade war time. Surely this’ll be to the benefit of anyone.
And right after deporting all the farmers, too! Trump speed runs America’s first famine since the great depression.
Who knew the Great in MAGA was the Great Depression all this time.
I mean Americans are more depressed than ever before. Make them great and that’s bound to happen.
In the next elections the Democrats may use the term SAFA as a counter response to MAGA
Save America Falling Again (SAFA)
Stupid scandals should get ‘-a-Lago’ pinned to their arse.
Tariff-a-Lago is a go.
Roma’s $1.25/lb + trump = $1.56/lb Cucumbers .85/ea + trump = $1.06/ea Avocado .99/ea + trump = $1.24/ea Asparagus 2.99/lb + trump = $3.73/lb
And that’s at an affordable supermarket. Add 10-15% more for places like walmart, albertsons, kroger, etc.
Don’t forget to add an extra 25% for all the companies using the tariffs as excuses to raise prices further to extract profit.
They did it with covid, they’ll do it again now.
Are all cucumbers imported? Those can be farmed in the US, I believe.
I suggest starting a small garden for various vegetables and spices to save money. For those living in apartments, you can make some in your windows.
Mini leeks are probably the easiest. I actually got an overwhelming amount just from two pots and barely needed to do any kind of maintenance.
No, all cucumbers are not imported. The US grows in season produce. During off season or low crop yields, we get food from Mexico & Canada. Southern states supply northern states but usually only east & west regions. So Florida supplies cucumbers to the east half, California to the west. Other states do grow them like Texas & Arizona. But we get a lot from Mexico, like a shit ton from Mexico, they make a lot of money from that supply line. That’s just cucumbers. It’s very similar with other produce. Canada supplies a lot of hot house tomatos of all types and mini sweet peppers. The interesting thing is, we export a lot of white corn to Mexico and there is no tariff on that export. Dumb donnie is literally punishing Americans while selling our exports for less than what we would pay. This is why we have NAFTA, for fairness and cooperation.
My garden doesn’t produce during winter, due to all the snow and ice. The lack of sun doesn’t help either.
Have you tried carrots? They can grow in negative 8 degrees Celsius (around 19 degrees freedom units)
I think broccoli and Brussels sprouts also do well.
When it comes to cucumbers, however, growing a ton, and pickling them is perfect for using all year round, and pickling is also way easier than I first thought.
Nah, not much makes it through winter at my latitude. Though I suppose with the rising temps, there’s always a chance this could be the year.
I’ve never tried this but how about one of those small DIY greenhouses? Apparently they’re pretty easy to make. I’m not sure how cold it gets at your latitude but with a greenhouse you could manage to lower your zone a level. Maybe enough for those carrots.
Worst case I guess is just grow winter crops during the summer. Half a year of cheaper food is better than nothing.
I’ve never tried this but how about one of those small DIY greenhouses?
It’s super easy to build a greenhouse for very little money. My greenhouse, used commercially, is an old Costco “barn” someone was throwing out. I spent $125 on good quality greenhouse plastic and another $100 or so for automatic vent openers and then reinforced it all with scrap wood. Another small farm down the road built one mostly out of old windows they got from a neighbor who was replacing theirs.
You can also just make a smaller cold frame with an old window and/or plastic. It’s also really helpful to have frost “blankets”, either as old used blankets/comforters or row covers like Remay or Agribon. I use Agribon 50 which gets you about 8F of protection. Not very environmentally friendly though!
In the winter, they are. English cukes you might find hothouse.
No because being forced to grow food on my balcony it’s totally why all of us enjoy living in an advanced economy.
I like growing vegetables and flowers. It is the only think keeping me sane living in the city.
I know some do not, but the tariffs are happening, so best you can do is adapt, though honestly I would suggest it even if the tariffs were cancelled. It saves money, is good for the environment and your mental health.
No because being forced to grow food
Oh how terrible. Someone might think you are one of the poors! A peasant even!
Time to get a shit ton of stickers with smug Trump saying “I did this!”.
Does anyone know where to buy these in bulk?
China.
You know what? I believe him
I’m half pleased.
I was pissed when he won, mad that this madman and his regime was in control of America.
Now I don’t think they have the capacity to control anything, and they have more of a shot at destabilizing modern society than ruling it.
They should keep building the tower of shit higher. It’s a great building material.
That might have a different meaning if I thought you’d read the article.
It is weird - now that donvict has “won”, his stupid base now thinks the economy is great. And donvict has not even slithered his way into power yet. I bet more than a few of his brainstems think that the price of eggs are now “great” again.
These same idiots are going to have to find someone not themselves, not conservatives and definitely not donvict when all his stupid policies come home to roost and start eating their faces…donflation will be a very, very real thing quite soon, it seems.
Are you going to add to them if someone arrests Netanyahu?
Emperor of stupid.
So I was thinking about the way he worded this, 25% tariff until the border crossings stop. I think he might be onto a 4D chess move here.
If he tanks the US economy so badly that it’s financially detrimental to cross the border then the flow of people across the border will definitely come down. If he tanks the economy hard enough we may even see the flow reverse, at which point he can lift the tariffs and declare the job done.
He is already happy to make Americans ignorant, illiterate, and spiteful to outsiders; is he really going to baulk at making them dirt poor as well?
Many flee Mexico to escape the violence and gangs too, do t forget. Yes the economy is a big part of immigration, but safety is right up there
If US citizens start to flee to Mexico and ask for asylum…
I imagine that a society that votes in a wannabe fascist dictator will continue to be a bastion of safety for people of different racial backgrounds. I know if I was fleeing violence and gangs I look for somewhere with a nice welcoming camp just waiting for me.
For clarification I am Australian so I have a bit of experience with a national bias of racism leading to poor outcomes for asylum seekers.
I am taking a more positive view than I was about what’s happening over there though. I think that the Trump presidency may well serve as an unambiguous demonstration of the end results of allowing democracy to become necrotic. I really hope Australians heed this lesson before our next election, although I won’t be at all surprised if they don’t.
He said he would impose the tariffs if he can’t hammer out a deal on illegal immigration and drug smuggling. In other words he’s leaving a way out
In his last presidency he blocked Canadian aluminium to force companies to buy from China
Don’t expect a way out
Yoy are probably right. It looks more like this is a pretext to cause a recession in Canada which would doom the already flailing Trudeau presidency. Even if Canada adopted the kind of border policy the Trump wanted, that still wouldn’t stop illegals or drugs.
Trudeau is Prime Minister not President and he’s already wildly unpopular so he’s going to lose no matter what.
There’s no way out. USA is responsible for their own borders. Canada as a matter of fact has reciprocal agreements with USA law enforcement organizations.
This is going to really throw a fucking bomb on the WTO. Like complete collapse of international trade adjudication and just viscous multilateral trade wars. US will have neither imports or exports. The farmers are going to be pissed when their market collapses due to retaliatory tariffs.
Last time this happened, they were thrilled to take it to the chin since it meant ‘helping Trump’. I foresee them cheering this on too, even as they fall into poverty and have to sell the farm.
some will. others will delude themselves that it’s everyone’s fault except themselves and their choice to follow a malicious fool.
