started out with an Architeuthis Dux, never regretted it :)
Addendum to 1: While QMK is nice, I personally prefer ZMK and use it even on my wired boards. So just wanna say, “forced to use” sounds a bit harsh. ZMK is a great and very capable firmware, and it does certain things better than QMK.
Well I won’t have any problems with doctors I suppose
tbh it sounds like what you need is better firmware configuration if these things are out of reach. a common approach is to make the spacebar a tap-hold key that outputs space on tap and switches to another layer on hold. on that layer you could bind arrow keys on ijkl, for example, and still have shift, alt, ctrl in easy reach.
I wrote a short Introduction to Small Keyboards a while ago for the guys from keeb.supply when they first stocked kits for my Zilpzalp keyboard.
Maybe it’ll help understand some of the appeal of small boards and how to productively use them 😊
So cool! Love the roundings, especially around the trackball 👌👌👌 And also Chicago Steno is such bliss 😌
Ergogen is so good 👌 Writing the firmware is surprisingly easy thanks to zmk / qmk :) Fingers crossed for the future work!
oh interesting! why only r3? 👀
awesome look! how are you liking the convex thumb caps?
If you actually have to type all day, you get into ergonomic mechanical keyboards 😎
Yup! Very nice prints :) I got it from keeb.supply btw, not my own print. (And they are getting the prints at JLC iirc)
The blue and white one is actually the hummingbird :) And yes, that’s a resin printed case
To be quite honest, I’m not 100% sure how ergonomic this tiny thing is :D It sure is fun to type on it tho and I haven’t felt anything similar to the strain from using pain rectangles while / after using it for a few days.
Well I’ve been using it for a few days and very happy with it :)
And you’re right, it’s smaller than that! The spacing is 15mm x 15mm
It’s very much functional :) But to be fair, the perspective does a lot in this picture. Close-up:
Yup, I currently have v
, z
, and q
on combos.
You can also check my current keymap in the repo I linked above (in the example_keymaps
directory).
I’ve been using this layout exclusively for a few months now, the initial learning curve was actually not that steep, since I had been on the Aptmak layout for a while before reducing it a bit to this state.
It’s minimal choc spacing (while not cutting off stuff from the switches). To be honest I didn’t expect to be able to work so well with it but here we are :D
It’s definitely about comfort, but i’ve also never been faster on any other board. Gotta admit I’m not a fast typist, with around 80wpm.
