  • I’ve had a similar experience recently with my family (though I failed to convince them to think for themselves) and I fully agree with you.

One of my uncles said he’s voting to Trump to lower gas prices - I told him no American president has ever set gas prices. My aunt, who was on the fence (no pun intended), was concerned about migrants coming through the border - I told her about the bipartisan immigration bill that Trump managed to kill so Biden wouldn’t get a win. She was also concerned about female rights. Someone else argued that there were no wars during Trump’s term and that Harris would be soft on international politics - I informed them there were “no wars” (not true) because Trump let everyone do what they wanted and empowered our enemies.

It’s just really hard to understand how people can go about their lives not have a passing interest in politics or elections. Especially given that it’s basically everything in the world right now.

At the same time, these fucking election ads are just the worst. Every single one of them, including many of Harris’, are full of blatant lies and distortions of the facts. I watch some of them and say to myself - this is what’s going to decide the election, an ad full of lies.

  • LOL This is just hilarious to be mentioned now.

The night he was elected, I said to my friends that I was looking forward to the onslaught of protest music like we hadn’t heard since the 60s. I’ve brought this up multiple times over the years and, as you’ll find in this thread, have only come across a sparse handful of songs. You have a very real point that’s going to be minimized by those attempting to prove you wrong with the mention of a single song.

I wasn’t around in the 60s but my impression, gathered from popular music at the time, was that a lot of people were anti-government, certainly anti-war. Music was largely how a generation of young people expressed themselves and the future of mankind will remember them. Today, they do so in fleeting moments on social media.

If you’re following me down this rabbit hole, consider that we’re living in a time that will be forgotten in the not too distant future. We all have the power to record and document our lives and feelings but no one is really listening.

Given that TikTok is our Woodstock, who’s documenting all this? People are protesting out there but who’s listening? People are making music but who’s brave enough to promote it? When the polarization of our politics is distilled down to the meme of the hour, who even remembers what happened two weeks ago?

  • Right. Throwing snowballs at someone is the same as setting a bus on fire. Got it.

That’s the dumbest thing to bring up. You could bring up setting a cop car on fire during the George Floyd protests, you could mention the car flipping and dumpster fire after the Eagles championship, shit - you could go with our police department bombing a residence, but you went with throwing snowballs as the label to keep off of LA.

Are you not at all aware of the history of riots in Los Angeles? You’ve done plenty of your own tarring over there, bub.

  • I guess that does make sense for powered speakers.

My speakers are passive so I have a preamp and amplifier powering them which comes off USB-A. Both the preamp and amp have a headphone jack on the front. I also have one of those Satechi Mac mini docks that has a headphone jack.

The Satechi reminds me that there are some smart third parties out there there. I could imagine a peripheral that’s loaded with some front mounted ports (usb, headphone, SD card). And maybe they could figure out a purely mechanical lever to press the power button. I would think that issue is more about the force of the press being enough to press the button without lifting the computer itself off the peripheral. Such a device would get me more excited about the new Mini. Although, I despise having to purchase peripherals to resolve bugs (I just bought an iPhone 16 that required a case so it doesn’t wobble on a flat surface).

  • Sounds like the plot from any spy movie where the bad guy wants to nuke the planet in order for a more perfect civilization to be born out of the rubble. Which is to say, I think we can all acknowledge there is some truth to the statement.

However, the rest of us rational thinkers might choose to prioritize other economic and legislative means before wiping out everyone but those who could survive a global disaster in their sub or extra terrestrial bunkers.

That would be your belief that it’s not unreasonable to have to physically pick up and upend a desktop computer in order to turn it on. For the rest of human civilization, the concept alone is ridiculous.

No. It’s not Apple’s fault I configured my desktop to be efficient and ergonomic. It is their fault that they first made a large screen iMac (with an inaccessible SD card slot on the back) which was best suited for my needs, then discontinued that product which required I replace it with a Mini (and third party monitor equalling more than the price of the iMac), put the button on the Mini which is nearly impossible to feel in the first place, left out an SD card slot requiring that I purchase accessories to reasonably use my computer for computing, and then created a replacement product which requires unplugging things from it and physically lifting it up to turn it on, hindering the ability for a reasonably efficient desktop configuration to be upended so they could save a couple dollars on their product.

Please, you can feel however you want about this but it’s an objective fact that this is not a reasonable location for a computer power button. I really don’t care that much other than the fact that that I’m already prepared to not replace my current Mini with another Mini. The Studio Mac will probably be my next computer because it reasonably has a power button in an accessible-ish location and comes with an SD card slot; even though it’s far more computing power than I’ll ever need and more than I can reasonably afford.

I would imagine you also believe it’s “reasonable” to forgo an SD card slot in favor of plugging your camera into the computer or having to purchase one or more accessories to reasonably use a desktop computer to add files to it.

Edit: I will note, to Apple’s credit, they put the headphone jack on the front. It’s sad how awesome something so obvious can be.
