Hey, 1k subscribers. Congrats everybody, especially @[email protected]. I believe this makes midriffmoe the most subbed of any of the moe communities. Also, it is only the fourth community on ani.social to reach 1k.

I wasn’t familiar with that onomatopoeia, so I tried to search around, but unfortunately couldn’t find it listed in the lists of onomatopoeia that I found. When run through MTL, Google thought it meant fluffy while DeepL thought it meant flabby. I am used to seeing ふわふわ (fuwafuwa) for fluffy, so I don’t think that is it. However, I am at the limit of my ability to figure it out.
Such a fantastic series. I miss the Mystery Research Club antics each week.
Obligatory shoutout to [email protected] if you want a more anime-focused discussion. Of what I have watched (or seen enough of to make a judgement) there are a couple standouts. Note that I haven’t really watched much western animation in recent years.
Wildcard answer would be Star Wars Visions. Each episode is done by a different animation studio, so it can be up to personal preference as to which ones you like, but there are some great showcases in the show.
Edit: If you care a lot about animation quality, I would recommend checking out the SakugaBlog. It goes into deep dives on Japanese animation. For example, they did a whole running series on Frieren (link to the first article).
A lot of the anime-related communities have consolidated over time to the ani.social instance. There are historical reasons for this (largely due to hostility from the ml admins), and if you want a brief history for just the general anime community, I previously wrote a post here.
That being said, the ani.social instance has been growing with new communities being added. Here are the more active ones:
I love this manga so much. Kaguhara is such a ridiculous character.
A couple fandom communities:
This is an excellent point that I thought about when a previous community I was active in got shut down on the ml instance due to some admin whims. Since then, for the two communities I run, I have an external wiki that I maintain with things like complete rules or an index of past weekly discussion threads, etc. These wikis are set up on a VPS that I am responsible for, independent of the host instance of my communities.
ani.social and the admin, @[email protected], has been excellent, and the instance is a logical place for anime/manga communities. I have also tried to keep up donations to keep the server running, but people’s lives change, not always by choice. Having some form of communication independent of the lemmy instance makes sense for those scenarios, if for nothing else except for communicating a migration to a different instance.
I didn’t realize this series had an anime adaptation. The manzai bit that they do works best in small doses I think (thus the kind of short manga chapters). Not sure how well it would translate to anime form. Might try to check it out though as I do really like the manga.
As somebody that doesn’t really follow VTubers at all, I thought this was going to be about Oshi no Ko based on the title.
Since I have started moderating communities and trying to foster discussions, I have tried to get in the habit of sticking to gender neutral language when referring to internet strangers unless I know better. Even though I am willing to bet the vast majority of users in my communities are male, I don’t want to assume and make anybody uncomfortable. So, now I know!
Just as a side note, I personally know somebody that has transitioned and changed their pronouns, and I still mess it up all the time in conversation. So, when I am posting in text form rather than spoken language, with the opportunity to proofread, I always try to double check what I write with things like that in mind.
I don’t know how up to date the repo is, but they set up a way to essentially queue up a bunch of image posts and then trigger them via matrix messages. I sometimes think I spend too much time making posts while trying to keep up on anime news to share, but I don’t even hold a candle to MentalEdge.
These are homophones in Japanese. Same thing as words like their/there/they’re or seas/sees/seize, etc. Words that sound the same but are written differently. The Japanese language has tons of them. Often, the ambiguity around homophones is used as a source of humor, causing misunderstandings between characters in anime/manga or puns that add a layer of humor to an otherwise normal thing to say.
I haven’t watched it, but it looks like Girls Band Cry. The 13th episode and finale is airing in a couple days. Not sure what episode this is from.
I have tickets to see Mononoke at my local movie theater this July and I am super pumped.
Filterable post flairs and instance-agnostic links are my two biggest wish list items that I think would go a long way to making that specific community much nicer (speaking as a mod).
Typesetting is one of those things that we tend not to notice at all when it is good, but becomes pretty obvious when it is bad.
