Not really mentioned in the article (but in the Spiegel one they source from):

    • All were sentenced under juvenile law.
    • The probation sentences are conditional, meaning the court can still send them to prison depending on their general behaviour, not just when they get into trouble with the law.

Juvenile prison sentences are very rare in Germany, as they should be. Education has strict precedence in juvenile law, the maximum sentence is five years in separate prisons to turn still easily formable minds around.

Although the rapists were ages 17 to 21 at the time of the horrific crime, they were tried in a youth court.

What’s that supposed to mean? Between 14 and 18 it’s always youth court, from 18 to 21 it depends on the developmental state of the defendant. Who does the blaze think juvenile law should apply to, instead of juveniles? Children? Those can’t stand trial in the first place! What’s next, sentencing toddlers for stealing lollipops?

Spiegel indicated that those involved in the trial have been subjected to overwhelming criticism and hostilities since the rapists were set free.

    No, they didn’t.
